Cellist Konstantinos Sfetsas and pianist Stephanos Thomopoulos are among the most talented and restless performers of their generation, each counting many successful concerts both as soloists and as chamber music ensemble performers. The pillars of their recital at the Dimitris Mitropoulos Hall are two grand works for cello and piano: Beethoven’s Third Sonata and Schnittke’s First Sonata. Beethoven’s work stands out as his largest and most popular sonata for cello and piano, while Schnittke’s Sonata is a brooding and heartbreaking work, where the forces of chaos and order collide with the utmost ferocity, creating a soundscape of unprecedented metaphysical depth.
