Twenty-five years ago, a close-knit group of musicians, seeking to counter the inherent solitude of the pianist, created a piano orchestra, aiming to redefine the traditional piano sound within a new framework.
In its debut at the Megaron, the ensemble Piandaemonium offers a multi-piano sound journey across different eras, aesthetics, and places. The works performed have been written or specially arranged for the ensemble.
In in C Lines 6×2 by Savvas Tsiligkiridis, the ensemble tests its minimalist sonic capabilities in a piece whose rhythmic drive evokes rock music. Nikolas Anadolis’s Old Jazz Memories awakens recollections of masterful jazz standards. With the 4 Miniatures, we are transported into a sound world that only the ingenious use of six pianos can bring to life. Christos Papageorgiou’s Musical Suite stirs memories of Greek and international popular traditions, employing a sound that showcases the piano’s deep expressive potential. In Theodoros Kotepanos’s arrangement, selected sections from Sergei Prokofiev’s three Romeo and Juliet suites lead us into the passionate world of the Capulets and Montagues. Finally, the program includes the world premiere of a new work, Pianoscuro, composed for the ensemble by internationally acclaimed composer George Tsontakis.
